Partners chief actuary retires

Partners Life chief actuary Chris Coon is retiring after more than four years in the role.

Sunday, March 22nd 2015, 8:15PM 1 Comment

Partners Life managing director Naomi Ballantyne said the growth of the insurer had meant a huge volume of work and pressure.

“Chris Coon has made the decision that the time has come for him to take a leaf out of brother [group director] Richard’s book and start easing towards retirement.”

Coon, 74, has handed over day-to-day responsibility for Partners Life’s actuarial functions to Anton Gardiner, who takes over a chief actuary. He will serve as a consultant focused on specific research and analysis projects.

He is also retiring from his Partners directorships. Partners said this would enable the board to restructure to best meet the requirements of future capital-raising strategies and would allow Coon to focus on an international project he is working on with his sons.

Ballantyne said: “From the staff point of view it will be strange not having Chris actively involved with the day-to-day business any more, but we can all take comfort in the knowledge that through his consultancy, he will still be applying his vast experience and formidable intellect to driving Partners Life to even greater success. And I am equally sure that you will agree that Chris has well and truly earned the right to ‘smell the roses’. While Chris’ directorship and employment with Partners Life are about to change, what will never change is the role he has played as one of the Founders of Partners Life.  Partners Life exists as the successful, vibrant, exciting business it is today as a result of Chris’ vision and passion.”

Coon and brother Richard started home equity release specialist Sentinel.

In my view Richard & Chris Coon coupled with Naomi Ballantyne have been and remain the most influential individuals between two of New Zealand's biggest insurance provider success stories. The latter Partners Life out performing their first success, Sovereign many times over. Supporting these winners has benefited my business over the years and wish Chris all the best in his well deserved retirement.
