Tenants forced to bid for rent

Some landlords are taking advantage of the strong rental property market in Nelson by making potential tenants bid against each other, people involved in the market say.

Nelson Homebuilders manager Bernadette Anne said she was aware of three cases where people had been asked to put in a tender for their rented property by their landlords in winter.

"My understanding from clients is that landlords somehow found other tenants willing to pay more, and then asked the current tenants to put in a tender as well," Ms Anne said.

In each case, the tenants had moved on.

"To be asked to put in a tender for your own rent I think is unreasonable. Tenants are then put in the awful position of not knowing how much to tender."
