Law change will help landlords

Residential tenants who "do a runner" leaving behind unpaid rent be warned – it just became easier to track you down.

The Government, in association with the New Zealand Property Investors Federation, has announced measures aimed at promoting stable tenancies....

...An order from the Tenancy Tribunal in favour of the landlord could not be enforced unless the landlord supplied the former tenant's address, he said.

"We often don't know where they are so the order becomes useless."

Under the new measures, landlords could apply to the tribunal for the address of a former tenant who owed rent, Mr Evans said.
