Trident Securities has decided to take its research package, which has been running for 10 years, onto the open market rather than keeping it in-house.
Trident Securities director Phil Harris says the decision is part and parcel of the on-going creation of Rutherford Rede - the entity formed a year and a half ago from the merger of Trident, which has offices in Christchurch and Wellington, and Auckland-based Financial Planning Associates (FPA).
The package offered by Trident Research Systems, known as TriDAS (Trident Data Analysis Systems), is solely quantitative and it's designed as a tool for comparative analysis of various funds and indices.

Harris says as TriDAS is a generic planning tool it has been separated out of Rutherford Rede as a stand-alone business and it will generate its own revenue and expenses.
The TriDAS database covers more than 700 Australian and New Zealand unit trusts and other managed funds, New Zealand shares, investment trusts and 340 economic and investment indices.
The package can graphically compare a security or index against up to eight others in a variety of ways including; cumulative returns, rolling annual returns and cumulative performance against something else.
Harris says TriDAS isn't competing directly with the mainstream research houses FPG Research and IPAC Securities as it also includes portfolio functionality tools, including; portfolio risk and return, portfolio optimisation and portfolio geographic asset allocation.
The package is designed by a financial planner to help others show clients investment principles and concepts, and to "blow away misconceptions about how different markets and funds have performed and their associated volatility".
Harris describes the software as a "financial planning decision support tool" which is fast, powerful and strong visually.
The package has recently been converted from a DOS based system to Windows.
