The Insurance Council has appointed Chris Ryan as its new chief executive. Ryan was formerly deputy chief executive of the New Zealand Tourism Board and has a strong background in public policy and industry representation.

"Some of the issues that the industry needs to address include insurance fraud, the increasing incidence of road accidents and the cost of burglaries and theft," he says. "These costs drives the cost of insurance and it is our aim to promote solutions where we can and keep costs at bay."

Ryan replaces David Sargent who has gone on to the position of managing director of FAI Insurance.
