Dorchester posts mixed result, Men and women equal as advisers, Will Winston Peters back the Govt's super scheme?

Dorchester Pacific, the listed company that owns Direct Broking, Equity Investment Advisers and Invincible Life, has reported a mixed result for the year ending March 31.

The company's pre-tax profit fell, from $3.69 million to $2.98 million, while its post-tax profit rose from $2.5 million to $3.0 million.

"This is the fifth consecutive year of increased net profit and earnings per share," chairman Murray Radford says.

Managing director Brent King says the finance and investment advisory and sharebroking divisions contributed positively to the result, although at a lower level than for the previous period.

The insurance division showed an improved return and the group tax charge has been reduced by benefits available to the group and to the insurance industry.

King noted that the financial services industry still had significant challenges relating to the performance of the New Zealand economy.

Men and women equal as advisers

A recent Newspoll study in Australia about public perceptions of professional financial advisers indicates that seven out of 10 people believe that men and women are equally good and equally knowledgeable.

However, about three in 10 rate women higher than men in the areas of trustworthiness, understanding, believability and communication.

Men, on the other hand, appear stronger than women in the area of authoritativeness.

The same study also determined that the Internet is not yet seen as a major threat to financial advisers, with fewer than two in 10 people feeling comfortable about making financial decisions based purely on information sourced through the 'net.
