National has not signalled a major shift in its policy on superannuation despite a media report today which stated this, Opposition Leader Bill English says.

"National supports the current levels of superannuation payments and we recently voted in Parliament to continue these levels of payment. Where we take issue with the Labour Government is on how to fund Dr Cullen's super scheme. The Government can't afford to commit $2 billion a year to it.

"We believe borrowing to save is a nonsense and we are concerned about how the Government will be investing this money. We also know that the economy will grow more slowly because of the scheme and that will affect everyone's hip pocket," English says.

"National MPs and I have told the public about our concerns at more than 50 meetings around the country in recent months, where there has been growing support for National's views on the super fund.

"A headline which reported that National backed the scheme was also incorrect," English says.

This is a press release from Bill English who is the leader of the opposition.
