The rest are expected to move progressively from mid-June through to the end of September.

Sydney-based AMP chief executive Andrew Mohl said after the AMP Life Board meeting held in Wellington last week that some resources needed to be shifted to Auckland to reflect what AMP believed was considerable growth potential. AMP already had 45 staff in Auckland. The extra will bring the complement to 83.

AMP’s NZ spokeswoman Rowan Macrae says the shift of the roles to Auckland reflects the fact the Auckland market was growing about twice as fast as anywhere else.

“AMP wants to have a critical mass of those (product and distribution) in Auckland,” Macrae says.

Staff members affected by the decision are being offered a comprehensive relocation package, or a chance to be redeployed to other parts of the business.

“We have benchmarked our relocation package against others, not just in the financial services sector but other industries too, and we think we have offered a very good package,” Macrae says.

AMP says it will also be rebuilding its Wellington numbers. It has recently advertised 10 customer services roles and plans to seek more in the near future as it strengthens its client retention team.

After Wellington meeting, Mohl confirmed there will be another Life Board meeting in Auckland in October. He said that showed AMP has more focus now on its New Zealand business.
