Parsons has been a broker for 9 years having joined the industry after 15 years in the finance and banking industry. He is a founding member of the NZMBA. “Being recognised by your industry as a leader is fantastic,” he said.

Finalists in the annual NZMBA Broker of the Year 2006 award were selected by a combination of 16 lenders and then judged by a panel of four independent judges from outside the industry. They were evaluated on four criteria: their business plans; customer service processes; knowledge of their market and the industry in general and a presentation on how the industry could grow market share.

Parsons suggested a competition and prize draw, encouraging members of the public to vote for their favourite mortgage broker, as a cost-effective way of promoting the work of brokers. He said he hoped the NZMBA would consider the idea. “The feedback I have had has been very positive.”

The runner-up for Broker of the Year was Mark Childs from Mortgage Link Wairarapa.

Regional brokers of the year were Glenda French, Mortgage Link Otago (Otago/Southland); Rob Parsons (Canterbury); Mark Papps, Nelson Marlborough Mortgage Services (Nelson/Marlborough); Finlay Abbot, Finlay Abbot Mortgage Broker (Greater Wellington); Mark Childs (Central North Island); Lyn Houghton, 24/7 Mortgages (Waikato/Bay of Plenty); Bruce Patten, Ray White Financial Services (Greater Auckland); Darren Lawson, Mike Pero Mortgages (Mid Central Auckland) and Christine Lockie, Loan Plan (North Auckland).
