Last year the overall award was won by Tower, with ING second and National Bank third.

This year Tower and ING are again nominees, but they have been joined by AXA. National Bank is now owned by ING and it is in the process of closing some of its sector funds.

All New Zealand based funds management companies that have retail investment funds are considered for the Fund Manager of the Year nominations and awards. A range of qualitative screens is applied to each manager to generate a nominee list. Quantitative screens based on information as at June 30 are then used to select the eventual overall winner.

In the sector awards, three managers; AXA, ING and Tower have four nominations each.

Guardian Trust has three and Asteron Life two. Four other managers have one each. They are the three finalists in the mortgage trust category; First Mortgage Trust, Fund Managers Canterbury and Perpetual Trust, and Fisher Funds in New Zealand shares.

Three categories have no nominations, they are property and two of the balance fund sectors, diversified defensive and growth.

In the New Zealand equities (Australasian) the winner is already known as Guardian Trust's small companies fund is the only nominee.

The winners will be announced on October 27.
