Recruiting young advisers

The largest ever insurance careers program ever seen in New Zealand, has been launched to address the skills shortage and talent attraction issues facing the insurance industry.

The program is being run by the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance.

It has produced a Careers in Insurance booklet to highlight not only the scope and size of the industry, but the vast breath of opportunities, and the sexy side to working in insurance.

The institute says 30,000 copies of this booklet have been sent out to every high school, business school and university in New Zealand. An accompanying website is being developed which will provide a forum for discussion, an overview of the insurance industry, the roles available and the career opportunities that it has to offer.

“The war for talent is on the concerned minds of insurance companies the world over - attracting and retaining young talent is vital to the long term success and development of the industry,” Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance chief executive Joan Fitzpatrick says.

“A lack of understanding of insurance itself and the opportunities that our industry offers are the biggest hurdle in attracting new talent,” she said.

“Insurance jobs are well paid and the rewards are great. The industry offers an incredible range and diversity of opportunities, welcomes people from a wide spread of backgrounds and attracts staff from highly specialised, mathematically orientated backgrounds, engineers, scientists, doctors and health professionals, IT experts, lawyers and sales and marketing specialists, customer-facing and business management staff and relationship management experts.”

“This initiative aims to better educate young people so that they discover the wide breadth of opportunities the insurance industry offers,” she said.
