While Jones has had limited involvement in the insurance industry, he has had experience in the business development field.
Planet said it had been looking for the right fit for the role, trying to ensure that the person selected would help lead growth and development.
Planet Board chairman Lyndon Bray said Kieran's credentials in the area of business development were second to none, and the Board is delighted that he is available and keen to lead Planet's next stage of growth.
"Kieran is aware of the challenges in front of us, and his main priorities will be to ensure that Planet is in the right shape to ride the wave of compliance and a more regulatory environment and at the same time, be in the best position to take advantage of our excellent credibility and history within the insurance industry."
Jones will be charged with helping Planet grow its bottom line and its support structures in order to realise the growth predicted over the next five years.
Jones said he is really excited about the challenge and he cannot wait to roll the sleeves up and get into it.
"The whole industry is working its way through the challenges of compliance and regulation and we have been able to put ourselves in a good position to not only successfully meet those obligations, but also use our strengths to our competitive advantage."
Kieran will start with Planet on 9 August.
