A former Financial Markets Authority manager has been appointed to take over running both the Financial Services Council and Workplace Savings as the two bodies look to work together.

Owen Gill has been appointed executive of Workplace Savings following the departure of Bruce Kerr. Gill will also fill the chief executive role at the FSC following the termination of Peter Neilsen's contract to run the organisation.

While the organisations will continue to operate separately, this joint appointment signals support from the board of the FSC and the Council of Workplace Savings to work together to strengthen industry advocacy in New Zealand.

Both organisations strongly believe that industry representation needs to represent member needs, support a sustainable financial services industry, and put New Zealanders' interests at the forefront, and this is the goal they are both signing up to with the joint appointment.

Gill is well placed to lead the bodies: he has worked with the financial service regulators in New Zealand and Australia, most recently as the head of stakeholder relations at the Financial Markets Authority. "We are excited to have someone of his calibre to lead the organisations through their next phase," WSNZ chairman Kerry Haycock says in a memo to members.

"Recognising that there is a lot of cross over in objectives and membership of the organisations, the time seems right to investigate how best to leverage the resources of the organisation to achieve better outcomes for financial services industry and customers."

Gill will work with all stakeholders to investigate and consider options for how our two industry bodies best operate in the future. The public and industry commitments for WSNZ will continue in 2016 while we work towards this.

An update will be provided in May.

It's hard to see that the insurers' specific interests will be given the much priority and encouragement to return to the fold.
