Accuro has launched a new health insurance product specifically for children.

KidSmart is designed to be taken out by parents and guardians for the kids under their care, without having to have cover themselves.

The underwritten insurance policies can be given as a gift to children.

Anyone under 16 can be insured as a child under the KidSmart policy. They ten remain on that policy until they reach the age of 25, when they transfer to a SmartCare+ policy.

The policy will pay all reasonable and customary charges for a medically necessary procedure or treatment up to a maximum cover amount – such as $500,000 per year for general surgery, $300 per night up to 10 nights a year for public hospital stays and $3000 per minor surgery claim.

Accuro says cover starts at $24 a month.

There is free cover for babies under six months.

There are not many policies in the market that are designed specifically for children, although Sovereign offers Private Health to those aged under 20.
