Despairing renters are doing whatever they can to get a house, flat or apartment in Auckland, where the rental stock is decreasing as landlords sell and cash in on the thriving residential market and expats return home to live in their "renters".

Rents were being reviewed every six months rather than annually, she said. Often, landlords were finding it easier to give existing tenants notice, hike the rent considerably, then re-let at the much higher rate.
