Apartment boom transforming CBD

Central Auckland is being transformed from office blocks to an apartment zone, with the number about to balloon in the busiest unit construction boom the city has seen.

The Auckland City Council has released a map of 38 developments under way or just finished in the city and nearly all the new buildings are apartments.

This will take unit numbers from the existing 7250 to well over 11,000 within just months.

Many of the apartments being built are tiny. One developer is selling a 28sq m unit as a two-bedroom apartment. At about 7m by 4m, units like this are a little over the size of a generous double bedroom in a standard villa or bungalow...
