Home boom rolling on

Continued strength in building consents figures has analysts rethinking views that the housing market has peaked.

June's tally of 2386 dwelling consents was the highest recorded for any June since 1976.

It is slightly below the monthly average for the past 12 months (2422), but it included fewer apartments than normal - 271 compared with a monthly average of 497.

Statistics New Zealand has been saying for several months that the underlying trend in consents has been falling since last November.

Now it is not so sure. "Since March the change in direction of the trend series is unclear," it said yesterday.
