Building boom thunders on

The house-building "super-cycle" will not collapse until 2005 and perhaps even continue until 2007, according to the latest economic analysis.

First NZ Capital economics and strategy director Jason Wong has prepared a detailed audit of the residential construction sector which showed it running close to an historic high.

In the past year, 29,000 new dwelling consents were issued, Wong said. This is the equivalent of building a new city the size of Matamata.

But Wong said that, despite the high levels of house building, demand far outstripped supply.
