Housing boom: blame the new neighbours

Reserve Bank boss Alan Bollard has told house buyers twice in the past week not to expect prices to increase forever. James Weir looks at what's driving the housing boom.

Some of the blame for rapidly rising house prices can be sheeted home to a government migration policy, according to economists.

In the past July year, about 42,000 more people arrived in New Zealand than left, as well as tens of thousands of short-term foreign students.

The rapidly rising number of people in New Zealand, mainly new migrants and foreign students, has grown too fast for new homes to be built to house them.
