Rogue tenants spur landlord to call for stricter rent laws

A Christchurch landlord wants urgent law changes to hold tenants accountable for their actions after being stung by a family he was trying to help.

Gareth Boyte, a landlord of five years, is the latest in a string of landlords to make their "tenants from hell" case public.

Mr Boyte, who owns eight rental properties in Christchurch, said he played by the rules of the Residential Tenancy Act – waiting for court orders before taking action against his tenants. But, he said, he now faces a $2300 bill for rent arrears and cleaning
