And more people spend a night in a holiday home during the year than in the town's motels, hotels, backpackers and camping grounds.
Taupo promotion organisation Destination Lake Taupo (DLT) has surveyed its holiday home owners for the first time and DLT marketing manager Paul Yeo said it had thrown up some surprising results.
