Boom rockets house rents

Taranaki's over-heated property market has rents running as much as a third higher than this time last year and state house waiting lists up 60%.

The return to normality expected after the "Last Samurai effect" – which saw rents reach unprecedented levels – has not happened, say rental agents.

They have waiting lists for rental housing, where the average rate for a two-bedroom unit has risen 33% in a year, going from $150 a week to $200. A three-bedroom house in New Plymouth now rents for an average $250 a week, compared with $200 this time last year.
