Third of coast privately owned

Almost a third of New Zealand's coastline is privately owned, a new report says.

Land Information Minister John Tamihere ordered the report during the debate about ownership of the foreshore.

New Zealand has 19,883 kilometres of coastline, of which 5866.3km is in private ownership, the Land Information New Zealand report says.

In addition 46.8 square kilometres of seabed is privately owned.

A total of 6032km of coastline is bounded by privately owned land.
