Landlords packing in beds for students

Christchurch landlords are cramming extra bedrooms into rental properties to take advantage of a huge demand for student accommodation.

Existing homes, particularly in Riccarton, are being renovated to accommodate more people and one Christchurch councillor is warning some students are living in overcrowded conditions and residential streets are being impacted on.

Cr Helen Broughton, from the Riccarton ward, is aware of a property investor who is purchasing homes down a residential street one at a time and putting in more bedrooms within the existing structure.
