City fails to meet housing needs

Palmerston North urgently needs an overnight emergency shelter and more accommodation choices for people trapped on low incomes, a forum on housing issues heard yesterday.

Fifty people attended the forum to debate new Government housing funds. They said there was a big, unmet demand for single and supported accommodation, especially for people on low incomes, people with disabilities, mental illnesses or drug and alcohol issues. This was supported by a recent Palmerston North City Council survey on housing.
