Rates change snares extra 10,000 in council net

The Otago Regional Council is using a change in the law to get rates payments from another 10,000 property owners.

Councillors acted yesterday at a meeting of the council's corporate committee to introduce a uniform annual general charge on 25 per cent of the general rate for the 2004-05 financial year.

Regional councils have not previously been able to levy a uniform annual general charge, unlike their territorial cousins, but were given the ability to do so in the new Local Government (Rating) Act 2002.
