Figures from Barfoot & Thompson showed the average house sale price sank from $422,961 in December to $382,439 in January, but agency director Peter Thompson attributed this to the seasonal slowdown that happens in the New Year.

Barfoots said Auckland's median in September was $402,505, rose to $422,001 in October then fell back to $414,742 in November. The December figures were artificially high because they were inflated by one sale of more than $6 million, Thompson said, and the October figures were also skewed by one large transaction.
