Tourist lodge bid slammed

A bid to establish a private tourist lodge in the heart of the Remarkables Conservation Park will be considered by the Otago Conservation Board today.

Environmentalists have slammed the proposal for a 40-bed private lodge in the Upper Wye Creek Basin as a "travesty".

Forest and Bird president Gerry McSweeney said the basin was an easily accessible and popular day walk.

"You only need to walk for an hour beyond the Remarkables skifield and you feel like you've escaped into a wilderness where there are no human structures," he said.
