Noise dispute looms

Port Nelson is taking legal action against three property developers, seeking to force them to adopt strict noise insulation standards in new apartments on Wakefield Quay.

The move is designed to curb the need for apartment dwellers to open their doors and windows for ventilation, which in turn could subject them to unacceptable levels of noise from the port.

But the developers insist their designs already comply with planning regulations, and one has expressed fears the changes being sought by the port company could heap new costs on construction.

The parties are expected to battle out their differences at an Environment Court hearing in early March.
