Manukau's population grew at twice the New Zealand rate last year.

And although the city had only the fifth largest percentage growth, it had the largest number of new people arrive.

The population grew 2.7 per cent from 317,500 in 2003 to 326,200 last year, Statistics New Zealand figures show.

There were 298,200 residents in 2001.

Manukau is the third largest city behind Auckland, with 420,700 people and Christchurch with 344,100.

The population growth for the greater Auckland region was 2 per cent. New Zealand's total population grew by 1.3 per cent or 51,780 people in 2004.
