New credit laws offer protection for borrowers

New consumer finance and credit contracts laws provide overdue protection for borrowers – especially from loan sharks, according to the Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux.

A hardship provision in the new law would particularly help borrowers, association chief executive Nick Toonen said yesterday.

"This will mean that if they unexpectedly find themselves in financial difficulty, the creditor will be obliged to be lenient in the short term in order to assist the borrower to fulfil their obligations in the longer term.
