The Tasman District Council is introducing the new rules, requiring monolithic plaster exterior walls to be installed over vented and drained wall cavity systems.

Existing buildings without cavities will still get a certificate of compliance if they meet the standards of their original consent, but new work will have to meet the requirements to the letter.

The rules have already been adopted by the Auckland, North Shore and Waitakere city councils, where leaky building syndrome was first documented in 2002.
