Tongaporutu baches could be removed under a proposal to dismantle privately owned holiday homes from conservation land throughout the country.

Department of Conservation (DOC) community relations manager Jeff Mitchell-Anyon said yesterday that DOC would strongly advise the New
Plymouth District Council (NPDC) to not renew the leases, which expire in April next year, on the 26 baches at Tongaporutu.
The NPDC administers the Crown-owned Tongaporutu Recreation Reserve.
"We have always maintained that when the leases expired, the baches should be removed. We have made a submission to the NPDC that these baches should be ultimately removed and the area should be for public use and enjoyment," Mr Mitchell-Anyon said.
