The Nelson City Council has released plans to sell and lease land at Nelson's marina worth millions of dollars, to create a "village" with cafes, a restaurant, offices, workshops and retail space.

The council has been planning what to do with 2.6ha of land in Akersten St for the past three years.
Councillor Mike Cotton said the finer details were still to be worked out but the plans would mean a big change for the area.
"It's quite exciting, it's going to be brilliant," Cr Cotton said. "It's taken us a long time to get to this point and it'll probably still take another couple of years because we're talking road closures and construction and buildings."
The council bought the land from Port Nelson Ltd about nine years ago for around $1.5 million, so it would be looking to make a "reasonable amount" more than that, he said.
