Moves are afoot to restrict housing on a large block of land near Christchurch International Airport.

The land – between Hawthornden and Withells Road in Avonhead – is now zoned to allow low-density residential development, but the Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury want to rezone the land for rural use.

The proposed Rural 5 zoning would only allow one house to be built per 4ha block, effectively limiting the number of houses allowed on the 15ha block to four.

Under the current zoning, 25 more houses could be built on the same area.

The issue will go to the Environment Court later this year.
