City Future infrastructure planner Caroline Hutchinson said 213 building consents have been issued in the first six months of the year, which means 87 more houses - a 69 percent jump on the same period last year.

"Greenfield growth in Aokautere and Kelvin Grove has been strong, representing a 32 and 27 percent increase in the number of residential dwellings granted in the city," she said.

"An impressive figure is the value of the dwelling construction. More than $49 million in construction is reported for the first six months of 2004, compared to $26 million for the same period in 2003. This represents an 88 percent increase."
