The Tongaporutu baches have received public support in an Internet petition aimed at saving the "Kiwiana icons".

In the first few days of being on the Internet, the petition has attracted about 240 signatures.
Some of those who have signed the petition, posted on the Wind Wand Taranaki tourism website by New Plymouth woman Lila Smith, have left messages urging the New Plymouth District Council to leave the baches alone.
Linda and Bob Smith had this to say:
"We must save the Kiwi icons. Let these go and what will be next?"
