Greens want dioxin testing done on flooded Whakatane homes

Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons wants dioxin testing carried out on Whakatane homes flooded in July, saying floodwaters passed over contaminated sites.

Sandbags used to prevent flood waters entering the town centre had diverted water that had crossed the Matatua toxic dump into residential areas, Ms Fitzsimons said in Parliament.

As a result, homes could have been contaminated by dioxins, she said.

Environment Minister Marian Hobbs told the House she had been advised the floods affected several sites around Whakatane that contained contaminated wood waste.
