Residents lax about security

Hastings and Havelock North residents are asking for trouble, leaving their doors and windows open as burglars get busy in Hawke's Bay.

Twelve homes in Hastings, Havelock North and Flaxmere were broken into during the weekend. The burglaries followed nine others in Havelock North since mid-October.

Senior Sergeant Greg Bradshaw said that, in several cases, windows and doors were left open. People going out for the night also left homes dark – an open invitation to burglars, he said. "These clowns just drive around and see there is a house with no lights on."
