Housing goes ahead

Plans to build an extra 320,000 homes across Auckland will not be slowed by the recent contamination scare, authorities say.

Some areas marked out for increased housing densities in the Auckland Regional Growth Strategy are suspected to contain above-average levels of pesticide residue.

An Auckland City Council map of potential contamination areas shows parts of Avondale, Pt Chevalier and Mt Albert could be affected.

Under the growth strategy these are "priority two" areas, identified for an influx of apartments and terraced housing between now and 2006.

The strategy, which has been agreed by the Auckland Regional Council and territorial local authorities, concentrates apartment building around town centres.


It aims to accommodate population projections of up to two million residents by 2050.

Other possible contamination sites marked out as apartment hot spots include parts of Mt Wellington, and smaller areas in Newmarket, Ellerslie and Onehunga.
