Consent for a giant sand quarry at Horotiu has been granted by Environment Waikato and Waikato District Council, despite the protests of 53 property owners and Transit New Zealand opposition.

Transit regional asset manager Ian Cox said this morning that the roading authority still had "very real safety concerns", but it was too early to say whether the decision would be appealed.
Up to 160 heavy truck and trailers are expected to use the Horotiu Rd-SH1 intersection daily as they travel to and from the quarry.
Mr Cox said information at Transit's head office would be passed on to lawyers who would consider whether the case could go any further. "It really comes down to having a look at the advice." Horotiu residents Pam Reid and husband Kevin were two of the most staunch opponents of the Riverlea Sands proposal.
