Quake cost could top $1m

The cost of a massive earthquake that shook the south on Tuesday last week is likely to top $1 million.

A 7.3 magnitude quake, centred in the Tasman Sea about 250km west of Invercargill, struck at 9.26am.

Earthquake Commission spokeswoman Joanna Martin said on Friday 219 claims had been received for damage to residential properties from the quake.

Of those, 105 were from Invercargill residents, 43 from the rest of Southland, with the remainder mostly from Otago.

The claims were valued at $897,623.
