Rule change could help clean up property

Manawatu Mayor Ian McKelvie says the council could change the rules to tackle messy property owners.

However, tougher measures would have to be backed by ratepayers and any changes could be up to two years away.

Mr McKelvie's comments come as the council struggles to deal with the owners of a Bunnythorpe property that neighbours have persistently complained about.

Neighbours say the property, at 35 Railway Road, resembles a rubbish dump as -it includes an old bus, a shipping container, concrete rubble and land fill.

Mr McKelvie said he sympathised with neighbours who say the council isn't doing much to address the situation.
