Owners tip mass bach sell-off after hikes
Owners of baches at Urenui and Onaero fear they will have to sell up because the skyrocketing leases are beyond their finances.

One Urenui bach owner predicted a mass sell-off of baches at the popular beach camp if the dramatic rent rises went ahead.
"We will have a mass walkout at the domain. There will not be one family that can afford this," she said.
All 121 Urenui and 21 Onaero domain bach leases, administered by the New Plymouth District Council, are up for renewal by April 1.
Due to huge increases in property valuations, those on leasehold land face massive rental hikes.
Last week, the council said the rent reviews were based on regulations
under the Public Bodies Leases Act and the Reserve Act.
At Urenui, bach owners currently pay an average $517 a year, but that is set to rise to as much as $7155 a year.
Mayor Peter Tennent said yesterday that while he was sympathetic to bach owners, the council's hands were tied.
