Beachfront apartments get green light

North Shore City Council is still planning to compulsorily buy prime beachfront land despite resource consent being given to build on the site.

Consent was granted earlier this week for a controversial new apartment building to be built at 33 The Strand, in Takapuna.

Wessim Trusts Partnership was granted consent by independent hearing commissioners to build a new residential building with three apartments on the site.

The company aims to demolish an existing residential building before building the apartments.

The company made two applications with different options to build on different locations on the site.


Commissioners declined the first option but approved the second.

"Overall it is our conclusion that through careful design and use of appropriate materials, the proposed apartment building will not have an undue effect on the amenity of the adjacent reserve or Takapuna Beach."

The company was denied consent for a five-level apartment block on the same site in 2002.
