Critics of Auckland City Council plans to intensify housing in the area packed Tuesday's meeting of the Tamaki Community Board.

Christine Baines told the board Glen Innes is a beautiful place to live and doesn't need more development.

"When I was a child I lived on Franklin Rd in Ponsonby. That was seen as the slum area and look at it now.

"Glen Innes will be the same in the future and we shouldn't ruin it."

The council wants to rezone land within five minutes' walk of the town centre residential eight.

The change would pave the way for smaller sections and multi-storey apartment blocks.

Council planner David Wong says the proposal aims to accommodate Auckland's expanding population.
