It was approved at yesterday's Cromwell Community Board meeting. A total of 42 residents living in Bell Ave, Roberts Dr, Fraser Crt, Innescort St and Melmore Tce will be affected by the new charges.

A significant number of residents are using double the 720cu m (720,000 litres) limit a year, with six consumers using well over 2000cu m.

Council utility services manager Peter Greenwood said residents would be allowed 600cu m a year and then billed every four months for any excess use at 0.28c a cubic metre.

For residents using 1000cu m over the limit, that would amount to $280 a year.
