Owners of older rundown suburban buildings in Auckland City could be offered loaned money for restoration work under a proposal expected to emerge after the elections.

Low or no-interest loans would be available to residents to help with renovations, with the aim of discouraging developers from buying villas just to knock them down.
The scheme is backed by Auckland City Council heritage manager George Farrant and political ticket Action Hobson.
At a talk given by the Parnell Historic Society during heritage week last month, Mr Farrant said he supported the idea in principle.
