The Environment Court at Hastings began hearing evidence yesterday over three appeals lodged against the multimillion-dollar coastal resort plans by Julian Robertson.

The 72-year-old developer wants to build a small lodge and 24 guest chalets on his 2000-hectare Cape Kidnappers Station land, about 4 kilometres from the golf course he has already built. The land is above Black Reef Point with a gannet bird colony about 20 metres below.

The project was granted resource consent by Hastings District Council in December.
