Maori tell of talks with lodge developer

Consultation with local Maori over the luxury lodge development planned at Cape Kidnappers has taken the spotlight in the Environment Court.

Havelock North resident Peter Nee Harland, representing himself as an appellant in the court at Napier yesterday, questioned Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga chief executive Marei Apatu at length about the issue.

The court is sitting to hear three appeals over Hastings District Council granting resource consent for billionaire Julian Robertson to develop a luxury lodge and chalet on his land at Cape Kidnappers.

Earlier in the week, Ngati Kahungunu iwi chairman Ngahiwi Tomoana told the court that local Maori supported the lodge proposal because cultural aspects had been protected.
